U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said to the Donor’s Conference convened in Paris today that it was meeting “not a moment too soon — The Palestinian Authority is experiencing a serious budgetary crisis. This conference is literally the government’s last hope to avoid bankruptcy”.
By the end of the day, some $7.4 billion was pledged — but it will take an accountant to explain how much of the pledges were new and how much had already been announced, as well as other details…
Earlier, Secretary Rice told reporters aboard her plane en route to Paris that she was worried about the situation in Gaza. “Yes, I’m concerned about it, very concerned about it”, she said, noting that she hoped to get a fuller report from the USAID Administrator “who has just been in the West Bank”.
